FIP (Feline Infectious Peritonitis) is a serious and often fatal disease in cats caused by a mutation of the feline coronavirus (FCoV). While many cats carry feline coronavirus with mild or no symptoms, in some cases the virus mutates inside the cat’s body and triggers FIP.
Common feline coronavirus usually affects the intestines and causes mild diarrhea or no signs at all. In rare cases, the virus mutates and begins to attack the cat’s immune system. This abnormal immune response leads to widespread inflammation of blood vessels and organs, which is known as FIP.
