What is FIP?

FIP, or Feline Infectious Peritonitis, is a serious and often fatal viral disease that affects cats. It is caused by a mutation of the feline coronavirus (FCoV), which is commonly found in cats, especially in multi-cat environments. While most strains of FCoV are harmless and cause mild digestive symptoms, in some cats the virus mutates and spreads throughout the body, leading to FIP.

There are two main forms of FIP:

(1) Wet (effusive) FIP: Characterized by fluid buildup in the abdomen or chest, leading to breathing difficulty or bloating.

(2) Dry (non-effusive) FIP: Involves organ damage without fluid accumulation, often affecting the brain, eyes, kidneys, or liver.
