GS-441524 is the main plasma metabolite of the antiviral prodrug remdesivir, and has a half-life of around 24 hours in human patients. It is capable of halting the replication of feline coronavirus strains, which are responsible for Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP). FIP is a lethal systemic disease which affects domestic cats and is caused by an immune defect or deficiency in a cat's body.
In order for cats to fight off viruses and form antibodies to prevent it from replicating, their white blood cells have to be functioning normally. Unfortunately, cats suffering from FIP are not able to do this, which causes the virus to spread throughout the body and eventually manifest into either wet or dry FIP.
Luckily, GS-441524 is able to act as an analog and stop the virus from replicating through RNA dependent RNA polymerase. This assists Remdesivir, the antiviral prodrug, in providing a protective barrier against FIP and helps the cat's body rebuild its immunity in order to fight off FIP.
