GS-441524 is the main plasma metabolite of the antiviral preventative drug remdesivir, with a half-life of around 24 hours in human patients. Both remdesivir and GS-441524 have shown to be effective in vitro against certain strains of feline coronavirus causing feline infectious peritonitis (FIP), a disease which is lethal to domestic cats.
FIP is caused by an immune system deficiency or defect, which leads to white blood cells gradually replicating the virus rather than fighting it and building as an immunity. Typically, cats without an immune response develop wet FIP, while cats with partial immunity develop dry FIP.
GS-441524 operates as a nucleoside analog, a molecular precursor to a pharmacologically active nucleoside triphosphate molecule. An analog interjects itself into the chain reaction and stops the replication of the virus.
