Researchers have recently discovered that remdesivir and its metabolite, GS-441524, are effective treatments for feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) caused by the feline coronavirus. GS441524, a prodrug with a half-life of 24 hours, is a RNA dependent RNA polymerase analogue. The drug works by stopping the virus from replicating, enabling the cat's immune system to target and eliminate it before it causes any harm.
Cats with weakened immune systems cannot fight off the virus, allowing it to spread and cause either wet or dry forms of FIP. Normally, white blood cells attack viruses to stop them from replicating, however, GS-441524 serves this purpose for cats whose immune systems are unable to do so.
