GS-441524 is the main plasma metabolite of the antiviral prodrug remdesivir, and has a half-life of around 24 hours in human patients. Remdesivir and GS-441524 were both found to be effective in vitro against feline coronavirus strains responsible for feline infectious peritonitis (FIP), a lethal systemic disease affecting domestic cats.
When a cat's immune system is functioning normally, it should be able to combat a virus and build a defense, or antibodies. Cats with FIP however, have a weak, or flawed immune response. Instead of fighting the virus, the white blood cells actually replicate it, allowing it to spread throughout the body more rapidly. Cats who don't produce antibodies are considered to have 'wet' FIP, while cats with some form of immunity may still suffer from 'dry' FIP.
